Activities Club Activities Community Activities Activities The Good Life Games Doubles CompetitionThe Good Life Games Shuffleboard Doubles Competition was held at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club on Tuesday, March 11, 2003. It was a great day for a shuffleboard competition - warm and sunny - just the way we like it. The early sun was so bright and intense on the foot of the Tournament Courts that we decided to use courts 21 through 28 in Section 3 - which has a north-south orientation - so the sun was not in anyone's eyes. We had 15 teams so we started with 7 matches and 1 bye. Pat Hooper and Loretta Mahoney had the bye in the first round. They helped out with keeping score on a couple of the courts. (Thanks Pat and Loretta.) We had players of every skill level from beginner to experienced tournament players. 7 teams came from The Fountains Assisted Living facility in Pasadena and they were all wearing very sharp blue shirts with the Good Life Games logos. The matches were set up so that players played against others in the same age group. The first 2 or 3 rounds were the medal rounds. After the medal rounds were completed we had additional play "just for fun". The winners of the Good Life Games medals for shuffleboard doubles were as follows:
Ann Reidelberger was a volunteer and helped with registration and brought bananas and granola bars for the players to snack on between matches. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to all those who helped make this event a success. Top
The Good Life Games Singles CompetitionOn Monday, March 10th, 2003, we held the Good Life Games Singles Competition here at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club. We had to dry the courts for yet another event because we had heavy rains Sunday evening that left all the courts wet. We actually were lucky to get a "Florida Wash" of the courts. There was a layer of yellow pollen (from the live oak trees) all over the courts and the rain cleaned it out - when the courts are clean the disks run so much better. At 6:45 am we were squeegeeing and toweling the courts and alleys and by 8 am they were all dry and ready to go. Play was scheduled to begin at 8 am however, we waited until 8:30 am to make the court assignments because some of the registered players had not arrived and we gave they a little extra "traffic time" to get here. As it turned out, some registered players did not arrive and other players who had not registered did arrive. So by 8:30 we had our pairings set. We ended up with 16 players playing non-walking singles which means that we used 4 courts (with 2 matches on each court) in the first 2 rounds of the games. We used Tournament Courts 3 through 6. In the past we have only played the 5-year age groups through the medal rounds. However, many players (especially those in the age groups with few entries) felt like they would like more play. So this year we decided to add some extra play for the participants and we formatted a single elimination tournament so that the age groups played out their medal rounds in the early rounds of the tournament and all those players who wanted to continue playing after the medal rounds could complete the additional rounds of the tournament. It happened that this year only 3 players wanted to play beyond the medal rounds because some of the participants had other Good Life Games events scheduled in the afternoon and couldn't stay to play while others were satisfied with the rounds they had already played. The players agreed that this year's format was more fun. The winners of the
Good Life Games medals in shuffleboard singles were as
follows:
Most of the medals were won
uneventfully. However, we had to have a
head-to-head showdown between Delphine Bowyer and Joyce
Linna for the gold medal. They were tied for first
and the only way to determine the gold medal winner was
to have a play-off. It was a good match but,
Delphine was able win out over Joyce and claim the gold
medal. Thanks to Joe Prisinzano and Richard Stimer for
pushing the disks (because it was a non-walking singles
match).
1st Place - Joyce Linna These players received small prizes for their additional play. Congratulations to all the medalists, placers and winners of the tournament and thanks to the Tournament Director, Mary Eldridge.

March 18 & 19, 2004 Open Division
Any Amateur Division
Tournament Director: Barbara Henson March 18, 2004 Tournament Report Many thanks to club member Don Breau for all of his work on the courts and the disks this season. Many thanks also to club members Joyce Linna and Ralph Clark for all of their help setting up the courts this season. We had a great season and we all look forward to next year's schedule of events. Today we had 14 open teams on a 16 chart and 24 amateur teams on a 32 chart . The open division finished on Thursday, the 18th, and the amateur division finished on Friday, the 19th. We have seen a lot of good shuffleboard players in our tournaments this year. Many of the amateur players have shown marked improvement in their play. We had the Washington Post photographer, Kyoko Hamada, visiting us on the 18th. She and her assistant took pictures for the shuffleboard article that reporter Jason Wilson is preparing for the Post. The amateurs played their semi-final and final matches in the main event and the consolation on Friday, the 19th. By 1 pm all the matches had been played out and everyone was ready to head for home. Thanks to everyone for a great season. See you next fall.
March 9, 2004 Open Division
Amateur Division
Tournament Director: Mary Eldridge March 9, 2004 Tournament Report We want to thank Don Breau for all of his help in getting the courts and disks ready this season. Also, thanks to all the players who pitched in and helped get things ready every morning. We had 12 on a 16 chart in the open division and 15 on a 16 chart in the amateur division. The draw and chart set-up is getting smoother every time we have one of these 1-day tournaments. Many thanks to Diana May for all of her help this season with the draws and chart set-ups. We had to sweep the courts this morning because there was so much pollen and dust on them. At this time of the year the courts often have a yellow cast because of the excessive pollen. We completed two rounds in the morning then everyone went to lunch. We called round three at noon. The open division had 4 rounds for half of the winners and three rounds for the other half. The amateur division had four rounds for all the winners. We finished play at 3:15 pm and we were all heading for home by 4 o'clock. Many of the players stated that they really like the 1-day format tournaments. Congratulations to club members Joyce Armstrong, Roy Armstrong and Bill Doolittle for their placements in the tournament. This was Bill's first placement in any tournament. Thanks to all the players who participated in our 1-day tournaments this season. It has been a lot of fun - especially when we didn't have to dry the courts. We look forward to next season's 1-day activities.

Any Amateur Doubles Division
Tournament Director: Betty Downing March 1-3, 2004 Tournament Report We were fortunate to have spectacular shuffleboard weather for this tournament. It was dry, warm and sunny all three days. Springtime in Florida is just delightful. This tournament offered competition for players of all capabilities. There was the traditional 2-out-of-3 75-point games doubles competition for the amateur players and 2-out-of-3 75-point games for the men's and women's walking singles pro players. There was also a 2-out-of-3 12-frame games division for men's and women's non-walking singles pro players. We started the tournament on Monday, March 1st, at 9am and the last match was completed at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, March 3rd. We played from 9 to 6 pm Monday and Tuesday. There were 150 total players in the tournament. The amateurs had 23 teams in their doubles competition, the walking men's division had 25 players, the walking women's division had 15 players, the non-walking men's division had 42 players and the non-walking women's division had 22 players. Five divisions in one tournament can keep the Tournament Director (and her assistants) busy. All the winners and placers in the amateur division were from our local district (the West Coast District). In both of the pro men's singles divisions, the 1st place winners are from the Southwest District (Bradenton - Sarasota Area)- John L. Brown from Trailer Estates and Jim Bailey from Bradenton. And the 1st place winners of both the walking and the non-walking women's divisions are from the West Coast District (St. Petersburg - Clearwater Area) - Diana May from Village Green and Arlene Guerrini from Mainlands IV. All 7 shuffleboard districts in Florida were represented in the winners and placers lists for this statewide tournament. It's nice to know that Florida has good shuffleboard players everywhere.
February 26, 2004 Open Division
Tournament Director: Mary Eldridge February 26, 2004 Tournament Report We also had the Pinellas League Singles Play-Offs scheduled for our courts today, which made for a lot of busy courts - and a lot of enthusiastic shuffleboard players vying for prizes. We used Tournament Courts 1 - 8 and Section 3 courts 15 - 17 and 21 - 28. (The Pinellas League will play their Doubles Play-Offs here next Thursday and Friday.) The sun came out around 10 o'clock and things cleared up and warmed up quickly. Congratulations to club members Joyce Linna, Roy Armstrong, Herb Haydon and Joyce Armstrong for their placements in the amateur division. Our amateurs are getting better all the time. We had a light shower around 1:30 pm which held up play for about 45 minutes. The open division was in their final matches and they decided to flip for position and leave. The amateurs continued on and played through the final matches of their tournament. It was a busy day all around, but everyone had fun and that is our purpose.
February 12 & 13, 2004
Tournament Director: Barbara Henson February 12, 2004 Tournament Report This tournament was sponsored by long-time club member (and officer) Jules Beaupré. Jules has been a generous tournament sponsor for many years and we are sad that he is not able to attend his tournament this year. We received an email this week informing us that Jules is not feeling up to par these days and that he would probably not be able to visit us this season. We miss his cheerful and friendly presence at the club and at our tournaments. The club members and the players all thank Jules for his sponsorship of this "No 2 Pros Doubles" and we all send our prayers for his speedy recovery. Jules has many friends in Florida and we all wish him the best of luck and thank him for his many years of devotion to the club and to shuffleboard. We had 33 teams entered which filled a 32 chart and created one sub-bracket. We used courts 2 through 8 on the Tournament courts, 21 through 28 in Section 3 and courts 15 through 17 - also in Section 3. The courts and the blocks were running "fast". Thanks to Roy Armstrong, Joyce Linna and Mary Eldridge for cleaning and washing the courts on Wednesday (Feb.11th) afternoon. We are in pollen season so the courts were beginning to have a yellowish cast and there is some road work being done on 4th Ave No (which runs adjacent to the club) so there was also a ton of dust and dirt on the courts. We cleaned 24 courts - just to be safe. Thanks to Don Breau and the gang for getting the courts ready for play in the morning. Jason Wilson, a reporter working on an article about shuffleboard for the Washington Post, visited the club during the tournament. He was interested in learning about the game, the club and the general state of shuffleboard in St. Petersburg. He interviewed several players and tried his hand at playing the game. We completed the competition through the quarter-finals of the main event and the consolation on Thursday. The last match lasted until just about 6 pm. On Friday morning it was foggy again, but the courts were dry and all the semi-final matches got started promptly at 9 am. The final matches went fast and the tournament was finished by 12:45 pm and everyone would probably have time to get home before the rush hour traffic started on this lucky Friday the 13th.

February 3, 2004 Tournament Report
We were all very happy to see totally
dry courts when we arrived at the club at 7:30 this morning. Even
the courts next to the building were dry. Thanks to Don Breau and
the gang for getting the courts set up for play.
We had 38 entries which made 19 teams on a 16 chart with 3 sub-brackets. Thanks to Joyce Linna for handling the registration process. Also, thanks to Diana May for her excellent help in preparing the draw.
We started out using Tournament Courts 3 - 8 and courts 26, 27 and 28 in Section 3. After the second round we moved all matches to courts in section 3 so that our club members could play their daily games on the Tournament Courts like they do just about every day in the winter season.
Congratulations to club members Don Breau and Gabe Riontino for their placements in the consolation.
Our 1 Day Tournament format calls for one 20-frame game for each match. After 10 frames have been played, the players change colors and the side with the higher score at the end of the 20th frame wins the game and match. This format allows us to complete up to 5 rounds in one day.
The courts and blocks were running fast in the warm and sunny weather so it was a good day for a little fun and competition. We finished the final matches by 2:45 pm and everyone had headed for home by 3 pm. Just about everyone will be able to get home before the rush hour starts.
Our small 1-Day tournaments (Mini-Ts) have proven to be popular this season with both the amateur and pro players. We always like to see shuffleboard players enjoying an opportunity to play.

January 19 -21, 2004 Tournament Report
All 65 courts were soaking wet when we
arrived at the club at 7:15 am on Monday, January 19th. The
humidity was 100% and the weather man promised off-and-on rain all
day. We printed a copy of the 8 am radar report from
weather.com and it showed a large band of storm clouds just west of
Pinellas County and they were heading in our direction.
Shuffleboard players are always optimistic so about 20 players pitched in and started drying the courts. They did a great job to get the courts dry and ready for play by 9:45 am. All four divisions were able to get started on their first matches and they played until about 10:30 am when it started to sprinkle. The sprinkle soon became a downpour. Play was suspended and the players hurried into the clubhouse and enjoyed some coffee and donuts while they discussed the affection Mother Nature has for the game.
After about an hour the rain stopped and everyone rushed out to dry the courts again. The courts were squeegeed and then dried with towels and/or blankets. Play resumed around 12:15 pm and continued until about 2 pm when it started sprinkling again and play was suspended once more.
Since the Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremonies were scheduled to start at 5 pm, Tournament Director, John Weston, suspended play for the day at 2:15 pm rather than try to dry the courts once more. It was the original intention that play would be suspended for the day at 4 pm so that all those planning to attend the banquet would have time to return to their hotel rooms (or their homes) to get ready for the evening's festivities.
So, the equipment and everything else was put away and by 2:45 pm most of the players had left the club. It was a good thing because around 3 pm it poured again.
What a wonderful Hall of Fame evening we had! The banquet was held at the Orange Blossom Catering and Banquet Hall in downtown St. Petersburg. Everything about the event was great. The decor was lovely, happy hour was fun (and much needed after our very hectic day of drying courts), the music (provided by Carlo) put everyone in the mood to dance and party, the dinner was especially delicious and, of course, the company was just grand. 143 shuffleboard friends and family mingled and socialized throughout the evening.
Many thanks go to Glen Peltier and Mary Eldridge for planning such a outstanding event. Glen is the President of the West Coast District and Mary is the President of the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club. They were co-hosts of the State Singles Championships and the Hall of Fame Banquet.
Ralph Clark, Immediate Past President of the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, delivered Grace and the Invocation before dinner was served - buffet style.
Glen Peltier served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening and all those who know Glen, know that he has the "gift of gab". He did a great job.
After dinner, State President, Dave Minnich, conducted the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. Each inductee was presented for induction by a friend who recounted the highlights and other notable moments of the inductee's playing career. The inductee then received their Hall of Fame pin. The pinning was followed by a response from the inductee.
Most inductees had family members, friends and neighbors present to enjoy the big moment. The inductees who were present included Kay Buchanan, Ellen Davis, Dave Minnich, Richard Minten and Mike Vassalotti. One inductee, Lee Jordan, was not present, but his friend Dick Whitaker reminded us all of Lee's high qualifications for this honor.
Everyone was happy to welcome these outstanding new members into the Shuffleboard Hall of Fame.
The Induction Ceremonies wrapped up around 8:30 pm and most everyone headed home to get a good night's sleep in preparation for the competition in the morning.
Tuesday, January 20th, was kind of chilly but it was DRY and sunny. All the matches that had been suspended on Monday were completed and play in all divisions continued throughout the day until 6 pm. On Wednesday, January 21st, it was another cold, dry and sunny day. Play started at 9 am and all divisions continued play through their final rounds. The Main Event of the Women's Walking Division was the last division to finish at 5:30 pm.
There were many excellent matches to watch all three days. Some of the best players in the State of Florida had registered to play in this prestigious tournament and the spectators (and any players waiting for their next match) had their hands full trying to see all the good matches.
The players had good playing conditions in this tournament and thanks go out to Glen Peltier, Don Breau and to Henry Kirbach for getting the courts and disks into such great shape. Thanks also to Mary Eldridge for all the background coordination that went into the production of this tournament.

January 6, 2004 Tournament Report
We had a perfect day for
shuffleboard. It was sunny and dry. We had 15 entrants in the
amateur division. There were two other amateur tournaments in the
area today, so we were happy to have a fairly good turnout. We
used a 16 chart with one bye in the am division. Three club
members - Ralph Clark, Joyce Linna and Gabe Riontino - entered the
amateur competition and two of them - Joyce and Gabe -placed.
We had 12 entrants in the Open Division so we used a 16 chart with 4 byes. Club member Don Breau entered the open competition and he won the consolation.
We used courts 21 through 28 in section three and we also used four of the tournament courts in the course of the day.
Don and Gabe are both experienced players and we were delighted to see them make their presence known. However, Joyce Linna is still a fairly new player so we were all happy to see her win second place in the Main Event. She almost won first place. She had to play some toughies along the way - Gunther Forth, John Heron, Lorie Davis and Frank Hemming. Congratulations to Joyce from the club.
We were able to complete the competition, put everything away and be ready to leave by 4 o'clock. These mini-Ts are fun.

December 22, 2003 Tournament Report
Our first state tournament this season
was a resounding success. We had 82 teams divided into three
divisions. The Pro Men's Division had 38 teams, the Pro Women's
Division had 18 teams and the Any Amateur Division had 26 teams.
The weather was dry, sunny and cool on Monday morning. We used 41 courts to start the tournament. We had several more ready - just in case. We used Tournament Courts 3 - 8, Section 2 Courts 44 - 55 and Section 3 Courts 1 - 17 and 21 - 28. Tournament Courts 1 and 2 are in the shade, close to the clubhouse, and were too damp to use. We were not able to use them at all during the tournament.
Monday (December 22nd) started out with a razzle-dazzle rush because club president, Mary Eldridge, was late arriving because of a dead battery in her car. She called Immediate Past President Ralph Clark and informed him of the delay and he spread the word. Many thanks to all who pitched in to get everything ready for action by 8:30 am.
The draw was ready by the time the opening ceremonies were finished and everyone was on their court by 9:15 am.
Once the players began their games, they marveled at the overall excellent playing conditions. We can all thank Glen Peltier, Don Breau and Henry Kirbach for all of their work in preparing the courts and disks for this tournament. Without their knowledgeable and careful preparation of the equipment, it would have been a completely different story. Thank you, Glen, Don and Henry for a great job.
There were 6 sub-brackets in the men's division, 2 sub-brackets in the women's division and no sub-brackets in the amateur division. So, most of the players played at least two rounds on Monday. Play continued on Monday until 5:50 pm when it became too dark to clearly see the opposite end of the court. That's a pretty long day - from 9:15 am until 5:50 pm. Tournament shuffleboard requires stamina and endurance.
On Tuesday, December 23rd, the women's and the amateur's divisions were finished. The men's division had the final matches in the main event and in the consolation left to play on Wednesday morning.
We had a brief flurry of excitement on Tuesday afternoon when a fluorescent light in the lunchroom emitted a large ball of smoke. We evacuated the lunchroom and the clubroom and called the fire department to check out the situation. It was determined to be a "burned out ballast" and then the firemen gave us the "All Clear" to get back to normal use of the rooms. An electrician made an inspection and did the necessary repairs on Wednesday, December 24th.
On Wednesday morning all the courts were wet from a light, overnight rain. We removed the water from two courts and then had to wait for the sun to heat the courts enough so that there was no condensation on the shady end of the courts.
We ended up using just one court because three of the four contestants in the consolation final did not show up. Earl Ball was the only one to show for that match and he accepted the forfeit for 1st place. The final in the main event was held on court 28 - which was completely in the sun. All four contestants did show for that match. They were able to start their match about 9:45 am and they had an excellent match. They were finished at 12:25 pm and the tournament was over. Thanks to Mary Eldridge for standing in for Betty Downing (the Tournament Director) for the final match.
It is such a pleasure to have excellent weather, great playing conditions and strong, but friendly, competitors all together at the same time. Merry Christmas to all shufflers.

December 16, 2003 Tournament Report
We had 22 amateur entrants for this
tournament and 8 entrants in the open division. So we used a
32-chart with 11 byes for the amateurs and a complete 8-chart for the
open division. Everyone was able to play right away - which everyone
likes. No waiting around.
We used courts T7, T8 and 21 - 28. Court 21 was a walking court and Ralph Clark and John Witteveen drew that court. All the rest were non-walking.
Thanks to Don Breau, Jim Gaillard, Joyce Linna, Ralph Clark and Mary Eldridge for getting everything ready for action. Also, thanks to Diana May for her help with the draw. Several sets of hands help speed the operation.
The weather man cooperated with sunny weather. The courts were a little damp before we started play, but they were dried by Jim Gaillard and Don Breau.
We played our usual 14-frame singles games. The players change colors after the 7th frame of each game. This format helps us to complete the tournament in one day. We could finish a complete 5-round 32-chart, if needed, in one day. In fact, some of the amateurs played 5 rounds today.
Club members Ralph Clark, Joyce Linna, Herb Haydon and Bill Doolittle entered the amateur division. Joyce lasted to the quarter-finals where she lost to Bob Adams. Joyce, Herb and Bill are still new to tournament play so we are glad that they are getting some good competitive experience. Of course, we always expect good things from our resident amateur guru, Ralph. Better luck next time, folks.
Congratulations to the amateur winner, Marx Kristek and to the open winner, Don Breau. They were both shooting "hot". Good going, guys. Thanks to all participating players.
Every time we have one of these mini-Ts we have different winners. So lots of players are getting into the winner's circle. And, we are all having fun.
See y'all here Monday for the state doubles tournament. There will be pro men, pro women and any amateur divisions. And, don't forget our next "one day non-walking singles" mini-T on Tuesday, January 6, 2004.

December 2, 2003 Tournament Report
It was a perfect December day. It
was a little cool in the morning, but it warmed up as the day went along
and it was dry and sunny all day. The flags looked nice waving in
the breeze.
We had a dozen players in the open division and a dozen in the amateur division. There were about 150 amateurs playing in leagues today in our district and there are two tournaments (Leesburg and Fort Myers) in progress for the pro players today, as well. We offer local fun for those who are not in Tuesday leagues and do not travel to out of town tournaments.
Thanks to Paul Archambault for his help with the draw.
Club member, Mel Cutler, had entered the open division but graciously agreed to withdraw his entry when we found we would not have an even number of pro players. Thanks, Mel, for being a good sport.
We used courts 21 through 28 (in section 3) for all of our games. Thanks to Don Breau for sweeping and beading the courts this morning.
Our tournament format today was one 20-frame game per match. After 10 frames the players switched colors. They had 4 practice shots before the game started and 4 more before the second half started. Yellow was out to start both halves.
The 20-frame format allows enough time for a team to get back in the game if they have a bad start. However, it also tends to result in high scores in many games. It takes about an hour or so to complete one round.
The courts were running good today and some players commented that they kept shooting themselves into the kitchen. None of the games ended with negative scores, though. There were a couple of very close games.
The club's regular players showed up at 12:30 pm to play their usual daily games. They used six of the Tournament Courts for their three 30-minute games.
It was nice to see Richard and Nita Minten stopping by for a visit. We all discussed the Tampa Bay Bucs and their inexplicable season.
Thanks to Mary Beth Heron and Diana May for helping Mary Eldridge put equipment away at the end of the day.
This was a small tournament, but we had fun.

November 13, 2003 Tournament Report
We had another set of beautiful days
for the first District Sponsored tournament this season - cool in the
mornings and warmer as the day progressed.
We had 31 teams on a 32 chart, so all but one team got right down to business at 9 am on Thursday. Club members Mel Cutler (pro) and Ralph Clark (am) teamed up to give it a go. They played well even though they did not get into the final rounds.
We used courts 11 - 17 and courts 21 - 28 in Section 3. The sun shines directly in the eyes of the players at the foot of the Tournament Courts in the morning, so we used the side courts for the first round or two.
Glen Peltier has the disks running so nice that the players enjoyed their matches even if things didn't turn out like they wanted. Thanks, Glen, for a great job.
The West Coast District added $200 to the prize pot for this tournament so the winners and placers got plump envelopes.
The only way this tournament could have been better would be if there had been more entrants. In a district with more than 5000 members, a 31 team turnout for a district sponsored tournament (held in gorgeous weather) makes us wonder. It seems that the vast majority of the district's players are not focused on two and three day tournaments anymore. They like the league action where they play one day a week in each league they belong to. They play willingly and enthusiastically so that their team can move up in the standings and be the winners at the season's end. Even nice prizes, great equipment and beautiful weather cannot entice them to come out and play in these two (and three) day tournaments now.
What to do?

Veteran's Day turned out beautiful. It was warm, sunny and dry
with light breezes. We started right out at 9 am and we were
finished by 3 pm.
We used courts 21 through 28 in Section 3 and we had four courts of amateurs and two courts of open players. We had one extra player in the open division so we had a sub-bracket at line 1.
The courts were running great because they were washed and waxed over the week-end. Don Breau, Ralph Clark and Mary Eldridge washed the courts on Saturday and Glen Peltier and Henry Kirbach waxed them on Sunday. Glen and Henry have also been working on the disks and it showed. The disks were fast. Thanks to everyone one for working on the courts and disks.
The format for this 1 Day tournament is one 14-frame game per round. The players change colors after the 7th frame and whoever is ahead at the end of the 14th frame is the winner of the round. The winner moves on to the next round. This format works good for a 1 day tournament because you can get up to five or six rounds played from 9 am to about 5 pm. We played four rounds in the am division today and three rounds in the open - except for the sub-bracket players who played four rounds (if they stayed in the tournament).
Thanks to Diana May, Joe Greenwood, Joyce Linna and Mary Eldridge for their help in putting the equipment away and closing things up after the tournament. Also, thanks to all the players who participated.
We all had fun today and we look forward to our upcoming competitions.

March 20, 2003 Tournament Report
Everything started out so
beautifully on Thursday, the 20th. It was sunny and bright
and the courts were totally dry. It looked like we were
going to get lucky and have a tournament in which the weather
was not a factor.
We thanked Don Breau and Joyce Linna for all of their work for the club this season. A bad weather season makes a lot of extra work for all concerned.
We had 16 teams registered for the Open Division and 21 teams registered for the Any Amateurs Division. The Open had a 16 chart with no byes or sub-brackets so everyone played immediately. However, the Ams had a 32 chart with 11 byes and when there is an odd number of byes that means that one team has to wait for the outcome of a match to find out who their opponents will be. The odd bye was on line 29 and the team of Ed Schiedel and Rose O'Mara drew line 30 so they had to wait for their opponent to be determined by the the outcome of the match between line 31 (John Hubbard and Gene Wolfe) and line 32 (Joyce Linna and Jules Beaupre). Hubbard and Wolfe won their first match and their second match (with Schiedel and O'Mara) as well.
The Open Division was able to finish play on Thursday, the 20th, and did not have to return on Friday, the 21st. The only weather troubles we had on Thursday was the heat, high humidity and some wind.
Friday was another matter altogether. It rained hard overnight and the courts had to be squeegeed and dried in the morning. Thanks to Mary Eldridge for squeegeeing the courts and to Don Winkleblech and Charlie Canady for toweling the courts and alleys. It was a little cloudy when we started at 8:30 am but the players dove right in and completed their first game and were working on their second games when it started to sprinkle around 9:40 am. We thought that it was going to be "just a sprinkle". Within a few minutes it was an outright downpour. It soon became obvious that we were not going to get to play any more for quite a while. So the four teams in the main event decided to draw cards to decide which team would get which placement. They decided that the ace would count as a one and that the king would be the high card. We laid out a deck of cards on the pool table and one member of each team drew a card.
Jim Barron drew first and drew the 3 of spades. Charlie Canady drew second and he drew the 7 of clubs. John Hubbard drew next and he drew the 8 of hearts. Tom Solomon drew last and he drew the 9 of spades. And thus, the placements in the Any Ams main event were determined.
It continued to pour until around 12:15
pm and we got between 2 and 3 inches of rain. It was
like one of our summer cloud bursts. The courts were
flooded as can be seen in the Section 3 courts below.
About a half an hour after it stopped raining the water had
drained away, the sun was shining and it looked like a great day
for shuffleboard.
This was a fitting end for our season because just about every tournament on our schedule was rained on or rained out, thanks mostly to El Nino. Next season will be a lot better - we hope.

March 17, 2003 Tournament Report
We had rain overnight on March 16th, so we had some drying to do on the courts in the morning of the 17th. This tournament had only pro divisions - no amateurs this time. We had 142 entrants and we used 35 courts in the first and second rounds. We used Tournament Courts 1 through 8, Section 3 Courts 1 through 17 and 21 through 28 and the two end courts in Section 2 (45 and 46). Once we got the courts dried and glassed we were ready for play. It took a lot of work to get the necessary 35 courts in playing condition and we thank all those who helped.
There were 46 teams in the men's division on a 64 chart with 18 byes. No men's team had to wait for an opponent at the beginning of the tournament because the number of byes was even. The women's division had 25 teams on a 32 chart with 7 byes. Whenever there is an odd number of byes then one team must wait for their first opponent to be determined. Line number 17 was the odd bye on the women's chart and the team of Mary Button and Helen Schmidt drew line 18 so they had to wait for their opponent to be determined by the outcome of the match between line 19 -Nancy Young & Cecile Messier and line 20 - Jane O. Bird & Marty Reiter. (Young & Messier won their first match and played Button & Schmidt in the second round.)
The weather stayed warm, sunny and bright with some wind for most of Monday, the 17th. However, around 3:30 pm some clouds started to build. At 4:05 pm we had a downpour. Play was called off for the day and within ten minutes most everyone was gone except the RVers parked at the Club for the tournament. Club President, Mary Eldridge, stayed to put everything away and close up the club. It stopped raining about 4:30 pm and around 5 pm Mary and Bill Lohbusch (an RVer from Hawthorne near Leesburg) decided to squeegee the courts with the hope that it would not rain again overnight. It took about 25 minutes to do the Tournament Courts and the Section 3 Courts 21 through 28 and 15, 16 and 17. The luck of the Irish was with us and it didn't rain again overnight. Everything was nice and dry Tuesday morning and we were able to start play promptly at 9 am. Thanks to Mary and Bill for a job well done.
The spectators had a field day watching
a lot of excellent play as the contestants in the men's division
battled for position in the semi-final matches and in the final
matches. Board play was the order of the day and all the
placing teams had their "good stuff". After
months of highly competitive play, the players are really at
their peak as we near the end of the season. These players
are winners whether they win every match or not. It was a
pleasure to watch so much great shuffleboard.
The women's division had very competitive play up through the semi-finals, however, they did not play the finals (for 1st and 2nd) or the play-off (for 3rd and 4th) rounds of the main event. Instead they negotiated the positions and several of the placers left early. The consolation bracket of the women's division did play through to the finals and the play-off and they provided plenty of strong and exciting shuffleboard.
The team of Jordan and Ball was a last minute arrangement because they both had scheduled the tournament with other players. Jordan had planned to play wit
